Today when most women deliver they go home between 24 and 48 hours postpartum. Then they usually do not see or talk to their doctor until 6 weeks postpartum.
Our approach is different. The time period between birth and the 6 weeks appointment is full of new challenges for the mother. We want to be there when the mother needs us the most. The day after the birth we call the new mother. Then at three days after the birth we do a home visit to examine both the mother and baby. At four weeks postpartum we will make another phone call to ensure that there are no concerns or questions. At six weeks postpartum the final postpartum visit is done. This exam will include birth control counseling and a physical examination. If a pap smear or any additional laboratory work is needed, it will be done at this time.
