The Birth Experience:

MIDWIFE MEANS "WITH WOMAN". Plans for the birth are discussed throughout pregnancy. A midwife is your partner as you plan and create YOUR birth experience, both during the pregnancy and throughout labor and birth. Most women find it very reassuring that the same midwife that provides the prenatal care will, 99% of the time, be the midwife who will be at the birth.

We are on 24 hour call 7 days a week. When you think you are in labor it is important to call the midwife. It also will help us reorganize our schedule so we can meet your needs. To have an extra pair of hands a midwife assistant will also attend your birth.

When you are in active labor we will come to your home. Patience and support are the most used “tools” at the birth. There are no rigorous time frames or “shoulds.” Each birth is considered unique. You will be encouraged to eat and drink during labor. To boost energy, most women prefer water, juice and snacks to the traditional hospital routine of ice and IVs. During labor you will have the freedom to move around and to choose the position you will labor and give birth in. Women can give birth lying on their side, semi-sitting, squatting, standing, seated on a birthing stool, on their hands and knees or underwater. You can choose the position that works best for you. Siblings can be involved, to their comfort level. Some siblings like to announce the sex or have the job of putting the hat on the newest member of the family.

Water is a simple and an effective way to ease pain and discomfort during labor and birth. Water also provides the newborn with a gentle introduction to life. While not all mothers who labor in water will choose to remain in the water for the actual birth, most find that their labor is eased significantly and greatly facilitated through the use of a tub. Labor also tends to progress more rapidly when a mother is in the tub.

After the birth the baby will be put on you stomach or breast. Breastfeeding is strongly encouraged. Once the family has had time to meet the new baby the newborn exam will be done next to you in the bed. Afterwards we will help to clean up, assist with nursing and ensure that the new mother and baby are stable. Usually the midwife is at the home several hours after birth.

We consider birth an incredible physical event that is very emotional and spiritual. Birth has the ability to shape our culture and its significance must be taken seriously. We consider it a privilege to be part of this special event. With open communication our goal is to help you achieve the birth you want.
